Skin Care Guide
Cooler days can make sun protection feel less urgent. For melasma and dark spots, consider your sun exposure and skin's response rather than the temperature alone.
“It is no longer hot. Can I use sunscreen only occasionally?”
It is a reasonable question before an autumn walk or a lunchtime outing. Feeling less heat on your skin does not mean you no longer need sun protection.
Instead of adding more products, let's look at the sun exposure and irritation that can be easy to overlook in everyday life.

UV exposure does not disappear when autumn arrives. Your skin can still be exposed during outdoor activities on cloudy days.
Rather than relying on how warm the day feels, think about your commute, walks and outdoor exercise. If melasma is a concern, keep sun protection and shade in your routine as the seasons change.
Look for broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB. For outdoor activities, consider SPF 30 or higher and water resistance. Apply an adequate amount according to the product's directions.
While outdoors, generally reapply every two hours and again after swimming or heavy sweating. A hat and shade can complement sunscreen rather than leaving protection to a product alone.
Do not treat the outdoor reapplication schedule as an identical rule for every indoor setting. Consider your actual exposure and product directions. Immediately after a procedure, check the aftercare advice given by your clinician.
Visible light as well as UV light can affect melasma, particularly in people with darker skin tones.
Ask whether a tinted sunscreen containing iron oxide may be useful for you. Not every tinted cosmetic provides the same protection. Consider its formulation, shade and how your skin tolerates it.
Changing sunscreen will not instantly remove melasma. Sun protection helps reduce factors that can worsen it; any additional treatment depends on your skin's condition.
Starting several exfoliating or new products at once can make it difficult to identify what caused stinging or redness. Irritation can make some dark marks more noticeable.
If a newly introduced, non-prescription cosmetic causes stinging or redness, stop using it and assess the reaction. Seek medical care if it persists or is severe. Discuss prescribed medication with your clinician rather than stopping it on your own.
After laser treatment or a peel, ask which products to use during recovery and when to restart your usual routine, even if those products previously suited your skin.

A brown patch is not necessarily melasma. Melasma, freckles, other dark spots and marks after inflammation may need different assessments and care.
Rather than expecting sunscreen to erase every existing mark, discuss the type of pigmentation and your skin's condition. Whether a procedure is appropriate, and which one, comes after that assessment.
If a spot changes rapidly in size, shape or colour, or starts bleeding, arrange a medical assessment before considering cosmetic treatment.
You do not need to choose a procedure first. Start with information that explains your routine and how your skin has changed.
You do not need to replace every product or rush into a procedure. First consider when you are exposed to sunlight and when your skin becomes irritated.
Mason Clinic's principle is to recommend only what is needed, in the amount needed. We consider your skin concerns, care habits and schedule together. When enquiring about a consultation, tell us which area concerns you most and what you currently use.
Consider sun exposure, irritation and the nature of persistent pigmentation, rather than cooler weather alone.
