Swelling and Pain After Filler: Is It Safe to Wait and Watch?

2026. 10. 26.

A Guide to Checking Recovery After Filler

Look beyond the amount of swelling: notice pain, skin colour and any changes in vision.

“The area where I had filler is swollen. Can I wait a few days?” Swelling alone cannot tell you whether a change after treatment is safe.

Hello from Mason Clinic, near Exit 7 of Sinnonhyeon Station in Seoul. Here is what to record after filler treatment, and which changes should not wait.

1. Swelling or bruising can occur, but recovery is not the same for everyone

Filler injections can be followed by swelling, bruising, redness or pain. Do not assume a symptom is normal simply because it can occur. The course may differ with the area, product and individual situation.

2. Notice how symptoms change, not just how swollen the area looks

Record when symptoms began, where they occur and how pain or colour changes. Tell your treating clinic if discomfort increases or something changes unexpectedly. Photos can help you explain, but cannot confirm safety on their own.

3. Unusual pain, skin colour changes or vision changes should not wait

If you have unusual pain, or skin near the injection site turns white, grey or blue, notify your treating clinic immediately and obtain medical assessment without delay. Do not dismiss skin colour or vision changes just because pain is not severe.

Seek emergency medical care immediately for blurred vision or other changes in vision. Do not wait for a routine message reply or your next appointment.

4. Do not press or massage swelling on your own

Avoid repeatedly touching the injection area or trying to press it into shape. Some products require massage, so follow a method only when your clinician has specifically instructed you to use it. Do not simply apply aftercare advice found online.

5. Assess the situation before adding or removing filler

Do not decide on more filler or removal solely from the shape while swelling is present. Filler materials differ; removal methods and whether removal is possible also vary, and removal has risks of its own. Warning signs, however, require prompt medical care rather than waiting for a cosmetic decision.

6. Bring product details and treatment records to the consultation

Share the date, area, product name if known, other procedures and when symptoms started or changed. Do not assume a later symptom is unrelated to treatment just because time has passed. If there are emergency warning signs, do not delay care to gather records.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Should everyone wait a few days for swelling to settle?
There is no universal waiting period. Follow your personal instructions, but do not wait for unusual pain, skin colour changes or vision changes—seek medical care.
Q. Can I press a raised area to smooth it out?
Do not press or massage it on your own. Care can differ by product; follow massage instructions only if your clinician specifically gave them to you.
Q. Should I report swelling that appears later?
Tell your treating clinic about new or changing discomfort. Timing alone cannot identify the cause; the area, product and symptoms need assessment together.

When you are unsure whether to wait, start with an assessment

At Mason Clinic, our consultation approach is to consider only what is needed, in the amount needed. Consider discomfort and how it changes, as well as appearance.

General information cannot determine your individual recovery. Follow the clinician who has assessed you, and prioritise medical care for warning signs.

Before assuming swelling is expected, check for changes in pain, skin colour and vision.
