Darker Under-Eye Circles: Should You Change Your Eye Cream First?

2026. 11. 3.

Under-Eye Skin Care Guide

When the skin beneath your eyes looks darker, it is easy to blame tiredness or reach for another cream. Before adding a product, consider changes in colour, shadows and any symptoms that come with them.

If your under-eye area still looks dark after a good rest, you may feel tempted to replace your eye cream. But ‘dark circles’ does not describe just one cause or one skin condition.

Pigmentation, blood vessels showing through thin skin, and shadows from hollows or puffiness may all play a part. Mason Clinic, near Exit 7 of Sinnonhyeon Station in Seoul, shares what to check before a consultation.

01. Dark circles are not always caused by too little sleep

Tiredness can make existing under-eye shadows more noticeable. Genetics, age-related skin changes, rubbing and conditions such as dermatitis may also play a part, so sleep alone does not establish the cause.

Note when the change began, whether both sides look similar and whether anything changed suddenly. Rather than assuming more sleep will always clear it, discuss a persistent change during a consultation.

02. Consider skin colour and shadows separately

Darkening of the skin itself may need a different approach from shadows cast by hollows or puffiness. Thin skin that allows underlying blood vessels to show through may contribute as well.

Lighting and camera angle can change how dark the area appears. Do not label it ‘pigmentation’ or ‘hollowing’ from one photograph or its colour alone. The skin and the surrounding facial structure need to be assessed together.

03. If it itches or looks red, review rubbing and irritation

Itching or redness around the eyes should not automatically be treated as a need for a brightening product. It may be worth checking for an accompanying allergy or dermatitis.

Reduce repeated eye rubbing and harsh friction when removing makeup. If a new product causes stinging and redness, stop using it; seek medical advice if the irritation continues.

04. Keep everyday care gentle

Maintain a regular sleep routine and avoid pulling or rubbing the eye area when cleansing or applying moisturiser. If the skin is dry, use a suitable moisturiser; applying more is not necessarily better care.

Consider sun protection and sunglasses when outdoors. Check where and how a product can be used, and keep it out of your eyes. These habits do not mean that every type of dark circle will disappear.

05. You do not have to choose a cream or procedure first

Moisturising may help care for dry under-eye skin, but one cream cannot be expected to correct hollows or bulges. A dark-looking under-eye area does not automatically mean filler or laser treatment is needed.

Explain whether your main concern is colour, shadowing or irritation. If you consider treatment, discuss suitability, realistic limits, risks and alternatives together.

06. Take one-sided changes, eye pain or vision changes seriously

If just one under-eye area becomes progressively darker or swollen, have it checked rather than assuming it is an ordinary dark circle. A timeline and a list of products you have used can help the discussion.

Severe eye pain or sudden changes in vision need immediate medical care. Do not wait for a cosmetic consultation or an eye-cream change; these symptoms are different from an everyday under-eye shadow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will enough sleep make dark circles disappear?
Fatigue can make existing shadows more obvious, but sleep does not resolve every type of dark circle. Pigmentation, skin thickness and the structure beneath the eyes may all contribute.
Do dark under-eyes in a photo mean I need filler?
A photograph cannot determine whether filler is suitable. Lighting, angle, colour changes, hollows and puffiness need an in-person assessment. Discuss suitability, limits and risks before any procedure.
Should I keep using an eye cream that stings until my skin adjusts?
Do not treat stinging as proof that a product is working or that your skin must adjust. Stop using it and reduce irritation; seek advice if redness or discomfort persists. Severe eye pain or a sudden vision change needs immediate medical care.

Check what has changed before replacing a product

Similar-looking dark circles can have different backgrounds. Review sleep and habits that reduce irritation, and have persistent concerns assessed before choosing the next step.

At Mason Clinic, consultations consider both the skin's condition and everyday habits, taking necessary steps one at a time.

Do not assume one cause for under-eye darkness. Check the condition before choosing a product.
