What kind of substance it is

It fills the spaces between the fibres of the dermis and holds water there. It is widely used both as a cosmetic ingredient and as a material for injectable preparations such as fillers and skin boosters.

Good to know

Applied hyaluronic acid mainly serves surface hydration, while injected hyaluronic acid aims at volume or improved hydration. The two differ in the layer they act on and in purpose.
