Skin Structure

각질층

The thin layer at the very outside of the epidermis, which retains moisture and blocks irritation with a structure often compared to bricks and mortar.

What kind of layer it is

It is a structure in which flattened corneocytes (the bricks) and the intercellular lipids that fill the spaces between them (the mortar) are stacked in layers. It is thin, but it accounts for a large share of the skin's hydration and defence.

Good to know

When dead cells build up excessively the skin texture becomes rough and pores are easily blocked, while excessive exfoliation can weaken the skin barrier. A balance between removal and protection matters.
