Skin Structure

피부장벽

A collective term for the defensive function at the skin surface that prevents water from escaping and blocks external irritants and micro-organisms.

What the term refers to

Intercellular lipids made up of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids fill the spaces between corneocytes to form the barrier. When this structure is disturbed, the skin dries out easily and becomes sensitive to irritation.

Good to know

Frequent exfoliation, harsh cleansing and shortening the interval between procedures too much can hinder barrier recovery. Attending to both moisturising and sun protection after a procedure can help recovery.
