Skin Structure

멜라닌

The pigment that determines skin colour and protects cells from ultraviolet light.

What kind of substance it is

It is produced in melanocytes in the lower epidermis and transferred to the surrounding keratinocytes. Ultraviolet light, inflammation and hormonal changes can all act as signals for its production.

Good to know

Melanin itself is the outcome of a protective defence response of the skin. This is also why sun protection is emphasised as the basis when addressing pigmentation concerns.
