Short for Superficial Musculo-Aponeurotic System, the fibrous and fascial layer beneath the facial skin that connects to the muscles of expression.

What kind of layer it is

It is the layer that supports the face from a position deeper than the skin and subcutaneous fat. It is known as the layer addressed in facelift surgery, and some ultrasound lifting devices are designed to target this depth.
